5,000 GALLONS OF WASTEWATER OVERFLOW FROM KIHEI MANHOLE
More than 5,000 gallons of wastewater overflowed from a sewer manhole in Kihei yesterday. The spill was discovered at 12:30 p.m. on Lipoa Street.A small amount entered a storm drain, before crews were able to contain the spill in an adjacent channel.
Officials say the wastewater did not reach the ocean.Approximately 2,000 gallons of standing water was removed from the road and the site was disinfected. The line was flushed and the Department of Health was notified.Warning signs were posted and bacteriological analysis was performed.
County authorities say the overflow was stopped by 1:30 p.m. and was caused by grease in the mainline.
