Public Safety Alert/Update: Honoapiʻilani Highway now OPEN following traffic accident and fire

Honoapiʻilani Highway is now completely OPEN. It was closed earlier due to a motor vehicle accident in which a vehicle went over the guardrail, and a separate incident near the Scenic Lookout involving a fire. Police tell Maui Now that the vehicle has been towed and the fire has been extinguished.
Update: 4:52 p.m.; 4:41 p.m., April 25, 2024
Traffic is now being contraflowed on the Honoapiʻilani Highway as of 4:41 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2024. The road was completely closed earlier this afternoon due to a traffic accident and fire in the vicinity of Mile 9 near the Scenic Lookout. Prior to the closure, officials with the Maui Emergency Management Agency had issued a Public Safety Alert notifying motorists of anticipated delays due to emergency response.
Maui Now has received confirmation from the Maui Police Department that a vehicle went over the guardrail earlier this afternoon. The vehicle is currently being towed and the fire has been extinguished, according to Maui police.

The Honoapiʻilani Highway is closed in both directions at the Scenic Lookout near Mile 9 due to a traffic accident and fire. The closure went into effect at 4:20 p.m.

The public is advised of two separate incidents on the “Pali” section of the Honoapiʻilani Highway that has resulted in a traffic backup in both directions. The Maui Emergency Management Agency issued a Public Safety Alert at 3:44 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, saying crews from the Maui Fire Department and Maui Police Department are on scene at both locations. Motorists are advised to avoid the area of the “Scenic Lookout” if possible.
