Update: Central Maui fire near Pūlehu Road burns 100 acres

Update:

An estimated 100 acres of brush burned in a fire near the Pūlehu / Ōmaʻopio Road junction in Central Maui on Monday.

The fire was first reported at 12:20 p.m. on July 8, 2024.

Crews arrived on scene to find a fire burning in fallow agricultural fields and a steep, partially wooded gulch. Firefighters worked to contain the fire with the assistance of both Air 1 and Air 2 making water drops.

In addition to air assets, responding units included: Engine 10, Tanker 10, Relief Tanker 10, Hazmat 10, Engine 13, Engine 14, Tanker 14, and a battalion chief. Further help was provided by tankers from Alpha Construction and tankers and heavy equipment from Mahi Pono.

By 4:30 p.m. the fire was 100% contained. Crews remained on scene into the overnight hours to extinguish hot spots, mop up the area and monitor the containment lines, according to fire officials.

There were no evacuations, no structures threatened, and no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
