SHORELINE PROTECTION PROPOSED FOR STRETCH OF HONOAPIILANI HIGHWAY

The State Department of Transportation proposes to undertake shoreline protection for a 900 foot stretch of Honoapiilani Highway in Olowalu which has been impacted by coastal erosion and wave action.

The work is planned for a section of highway stretching from Launiupoko Point to Hekili Point near the former Pioneer Mill Plantation Manager’s residence property and Camp Pecusa.

Plans call for the placement of large boulders and geotextile fabric along the shoreline slope, widening of the existing road shoulder, and installation of jersey crash barriers.

In January, Governor Linda Lingle declared this portion of the highway as a Traffic Emergency Zone, which allowed the DOT to initiate shoreline protection of the area.
