Habitat for Humanity Maui celebrated the dedication of two newly constructed homes to Native Hawaiian families in Kula earlier this year. These homes mark another milestone in Habitat Maui’s ongoing commitment to building strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.

One home was dedicated to a kupuna and retired educator who has spent her life serving the local community. The second home was presented to a family of five, including a mother who shares a special connection with her new neighbor, the retired teacher who taught her in grade school many years ago.

The homes were constructed on Department of Hawaiian Home Lands lots, where Habitat Maui partners with qualified Native Hawaiian beneficiaries to provide affordable, safe housing solutions. Each family contributed hundreds of partner hours toward the construction of their homes and participated in homeownership education to prepare for this major milestone.

The dedication ceremonies, attended by Habitat staff, volunteers, and community partners, included traditional Hawaiian blessings and heartfelt words from the families themselves.

“It has been a dream of ours to own a home, and the wonderful people of Habitat for Humanity Maui have helped that dream come true,” said Janae Moswka, Habitat Maui’s newest homeowner. “We are forever grateful for this opportunity. Not only have we gained a home, but we’ve also gained new family and friends along the way.”

These homes were made possible through strong partnerships with DHHL, dedicated volunteers, and generous donors. Habitat for Humanity Maui is continuing to work with Native Hawaiian families, with more homes planned in Kula and the upcoming Pu’uhona Subdivision.
