Ewaliko, Tasini Top All-MIL Grid Picks
By Fred Guzman
After helping lead Baldwin to an unbeaten league campaign and a berth in the state Division-I semifinals, junior quarterbcak Keelan Ewaliko and senior defensive end Pasoni Tasini were named the offensive and defensive players of the year, respectively, on the all-MIL football team.
It marked the second straight year that Ewaliko was so honored in the annual balloting conducted by The Maui News. He is the first player in 50 years, and only the second in the 88-year history of the league, to lead the MIL in passing, rushing and scoring in the same season.
The 6-foot-4, 245-pound Tasini was recognized for his work as a defender as well as a punter. He has received several Division-I college scholarship offers and is likely headed to Utah of the Pac-12 next fall.
With Ewaliko and Tasini topping the picks, the Bears dominated the all-star squad, accounting for 10 of the 24 first-team selections.
SOCCER: King Kekaulike swept a pair of matches against St. Anthony last night. Na Alii won the boy’s match 3-0 and the girls’ contest 6-0.
On Tuesday, Baldwin took two from Kamehameha-Maui. The Bears’ boys rallied to a 3-2 win while the Baldwin girls held off the Warriors for a 2-1 victory.
Two matches are on tap tonight, when Lahainaluna plays host to Seabury Hall. The boys play at 5 p.m. followed by the girls at 7 p.m.
