The SPCA of Maui is making a New Year resolution of “No more litters,” in an effort to control the cat population on Maui.

“Conservative estimates say a female cat and her offspring can produce more than 11,000 kittens in her life time so fixing our island cats has to be a priority,” said Peter Tierney, SPCA Maui Vice President.

This early clinic is a “great way to start the New Year” said Sue Liscombe, SPCA officer and clinic organizer.

The Maui chapter of the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) hosts the all-day spay/neuter cat clinic from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at the Maui Humane Society.

The service is available for all house, community and feral cats–No cats will be turned away.

Organization officials ask participants to contribute what they can afford towards the cost of the procedure.  Donations to the SPCA Maui cover the remaining costs.

The procedures will be performed by Hawaii licensed veterinarian, Dr. Celina Hatt, along with her vet tech team.

Cats should not have food after midnight prior to surgery day. All cats must be in individual carriers or traps (no card board carriers) large enough for the cat to lie down comfortably and be sturdy enough to contain the feline. Traps should be covered with a large towel. Owners should also label carriers and traps with the owner’s name, and contact phone number.

“We really want thank the generous donors to SPCA Maui who help us make affordable spay/neuter services available to our islands cats and dogs,” said Tierney.
