Schofield Soldier Killed in Combat on Christmas Day

The Department of Defense today confirmed the death of a soldier from Schofield Barracks in Hawaii.

Staff Sgt. Joseph J. Altmann, 27, of Marshfield, Wis. suffered fatal injuries when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire, according to the Department of Defense.

The incident occurred on December 25, 2011 in the Kunar province of Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Altmann was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, out of Schofield Barracks.
