Fire at Lahaina Homeless Camp Burns 4,000 sq ft

A brush fire burned an estimated 4,000 square-foot area of a homeless camp in Lahaina on Wednesday, January 11, 2011.
Crews from Lahaina and Napili responded to the scene, located just mauka of Prison Street in West Maui.
When units arrived, firefighters found brush burning along with personal belongings. Authorities say homeless individuals were also seen leaving the area as responding units arrived.
Ground units were able to get the fire under control by 3:32 p.m., and extinguished by 4:28 p.m.
The cause of the fire is undetermined following an initial investigation.
