State and County of Maui offices, HIDOE schools closed on Monday, Aug. 17 amid Lala storm recovery

Due to the severe impacts of Hurricane Lala, all state and county offices, Hawaiʻi State Department of Education schools and public charter schools, courts and Judiciary offices statewide, will be closed Monday, Aug. 17.
State employees affected by the office closures should not report to work and will be granted administrative leave, except for:
- Departmental Disaster/Emergency Coordinators;
- Disaster Response Workers;
- Employees whose work involves continuing crucial operations/services, such as hospital workers, correctional workers, building and grounds maintenance and infrastructure support workers, food service, etc; and
- Employees who are assigned to remote work.
Employees who fall into one of the above categories are required to report to work, or perform remote work. Employees who are unsure whether they fall into one of these categories should contact their immediate supervisor or manager.
“The safety of our people remains our highest priority as we’re responding to these storm impacts,” said Governor Josh Green. “Our state crews continue to work around the clock to protect life and property, and we encourage our residents and visitors to continue to shelter in place.”
All County of Maui offices on Maui, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi to close Monday, Aug. 17
At the direction of Gov. Josh Green, County offices are closing statewide on Monday, Aug. 17, 2016, in the wake of Tropical Storm Lala.
All County of Maui offices on Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi will be closed Monday and only essential personnel will report to work.
Hawaiʻi State Department of Education (HIDOE) closures:
Following assessments of school campuses and surrounding community conditions, the additional closure will allow time to complete campus safety assessments, restore utilities where necessary and address storm-related impacts.
In addition to Monday’s statewide school closure, Nāʻālehu Elementary School will remain closed to students and staff through Thursday, Aug. 20, because of storm-related damage and road closures affecting safe access. Families will receive updates directly from their schools regarding instructional plans and reopening timelines.
The Department will continue working with county and state partners and will provide updates regarding Tuesday’s operations as additional information becomes available.
University of Hawaiʻi System (UH) update:
Multiple UH campuses on the island of Oʻahu are currently without power, including UH Mānoa, Windward Community College and Kapiʻolani Community College.
Damage assessments are underway at the 10 UH campuses and other UH facilities across the state. Updates will be provided late Sunday regarding the status of campus operations for tomorrow.
