Affected customers power restored: 99% O‘ahu, 98% Maui, 75% Hawai‘i Island

Hawaiian Electric crews made strong overnight progress repairing damaged infrastructure and restoring power to 99% of affected customers on O‘ahu, 98% on Maui, and 75% on Hawai‘i Island. The company expects to complete repairs today on the majority of remaining customers without power on Oʻahu and on Maui.
Repairs in heavily damaged areas of Puna, North and South Kohala, and the southern part Ka‘ū, Na‘alehu, Punalu‘u and Kilauea could take at least two weeks. The company released maps with estimated times of restoration for areas on Hawai‘i Island, O‘ahu and Maui for customers who remain without power.
Crews made significant progress overnight to repair damaged infrastructure and bring 14,000 more customers online. As of 6 a.m.:
- Hawaiʻi Island: Approximately 17,000 customers remain without power. Most of the outages are in the Puna area, North and South Kona, North and South Kohala, Hamakua, North and South Hilo, and Ka‘ū. Today, crews will continue to make repairs and restore power where possible, prioritizing critical facilities followed by neighborhoods.
- Maui County: Crews restored about 1,035 customers overnight. About 665 remain without power. Crews are focusing on restoring pockets in Upcountry, Haʻikū, Pe‘ahi and East Maui. Maui had nine transmission/subtransmission lines affected by the storm and six have been restored.
- Oʻahu: Crews restored about 5,955 customers in parts of Central Oʻahu, Windward and Honolulu areas overnight. About 2,015 customers remain without power in Honolulu, Leeward and Windward areas. O‘ahu had 30 transmission/subtransmission lines affected by the storm and 13 have been restored. Customers from Salt Lake to East Honolulu who have electricity are asked to continue to conserve power today.

Misinformation about filing claims
The company advises that there is a lot of misinformation circulating about filing a claim after a power outage. Under Tariff Rule No. 16, approved by the State of Hawai‘i Public Utilities Commission, Hawaiian Electric is not liable for losses “caused by accident, storm, fire, strikes, riots, war, public safety power shutoff or any cause not within the company’s control through the exercise of reasonable diligence and care.” The losses that are not covered include, but are not limited to, food spoilage and medication that requires refrigeration, etc. More information about filing damage claims can be found on the company’s website.
