HIEMA to request federal disaster declaration following severe weather impacts from Lala

The Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency (HIEMA) is preparing to request a federal disaster declaration following damage assessments related to Tropical Cyclone Lala. To ensure thorough evaluations, HIEMA will deploy damage-assessment teams next week. In partnership with the Hawaiʻi National Guard, HIEMA will also conduct aerial assessments to gauge the storm’s impact across affected areas.

HIEMA will carry out Joint Preliminary Damage Assessments, which will involve specialists from various agencies collaborating to assess the extent of damage and the needs of impacted communities.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is also preparing to deploy assessment teams to the islands this weekend to assist with damage evaluations.

“This collaborative effort will include local, state and federal agencies — and will focus on areas that experienced severe impacts from the recent storm,” said HIEMA Administrator David Lopez.
