Nonprofit, Flagman returns to Maui with ‘Move Over’ Safety message

Immediately following successful school presentations on Big Island, Flagman Safety, an award-winning nonprofit educational campaign, is heading to Maui schools this week with its ‘Move Over’ safety message.

Flagman Safety will conduct eight assemblies at four elementary schools Sept. 8-11 where students will participate in engaging scenario-based presentations, alongside local law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics, tow operators and highway workers. These first responders will translate the state’s newly expanded Move Over law into simple terms, so children understand why the law exists and whom it protects. 

With Hawaiʻi’s expanded Move Over law, the timing of our presentations is especially meaningful, said Flagman CEO/Founder Cindy Iodice. “We start educating young students about the law  so by the time they’re drivers they’ll understand the risks first responders face while working roadside,” she added. “Our program also empowers kids to be active passengers, encouraging them to speak up when their driver is distracted or speeding and approaching roadside incidents unsafely.”

The schedule includes the following:

• Tues., Sept. 8 – Haʻikū Elementary, 105 Pauwela Rd, Haʻikū, at 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
• Thursday, Sept. 10 – Lihikai Elementary, 335 S. Papa Ave, Kahului, at 8:15 a.m. and 9 a.m.
• Friday, Sept 11 – Pōmaikaʻi Elementary 4650 S. Kamehameha Ave, Kahului at 8 a.m. and 8:45 a.m.
• Friday, Sept 11 – Kahului Elementary, 410 South Hina, Kahului at 1:40 p.m. and 1:20 p.m.
