Michelle Wie West chips in cameo appearance in Maui-made ‘Zombie Golf,’ a horror comedy filmed on Maui and Oʻahu

A Maui filmmaker has completed a 75-minute zombie comedy for less than $20,000—and golf champion Michelle Wie West makes a cameo appearance.

Zombie Golf follows four golfers who refuse to abandon their round while a zombie outbreak overtakes the course around them. Maui’s Lucas Zarro wrote, directed and produced the film, which is in post-production.

The film includes a cameo from Wie West—the Honolulu-born 2014 US Women’s Open champion and five-time LPGA Tour winner.

Zombie Golf is Zarro’s debut as a director after producing four previous features (Aloha Surf Hotel, Maneater, Terrestrial, and Entity). It’s his fifth feature alongside star Alex Farnham, the comedian known to many locals as the “One Dolla Guy.” Farnham leads with Xton James, Derek Bega and Arona Ale—the trio behind a collaborative Instagram sketch page whose videos have drawn hundreds of thousands of views—each making their feature-film starring debut.

The production tells its own story. Zarro and his team shot the entire film in 10 days across two islands, using Maui Nui Golf Course as the central set while the course stayed open for play—including through a tournament weekend. Nearly the entire cast and crew deferred upfront pay in exchange for a share of the film’s net profits, and Zarro borrowed $4,000 to help get it finished. Local and mainland businesses donated wardrobe, shirts, more than 240 drinks and a catered lunch for the 15-plus person crew, while young local crew members, from college students to interns filled several roles, and Akakū Maui Community Media hosted part of the production at its Maui facility. 

“On the surface it’s four friends who refuse to quit their round while the world falls apart around them—but underneath, it’s really about drifting apart and realizing too late how much your friends mean to you,” Zarro said. “We pulled it off in 10 days with a crew that believed in it enough to work for a share of the profits. Having someone like Michelle Wie West step into our scrappy little movie was surreal.”

Zarro is aiming to bring Zombie Golf to local audiences first, with Hawaiʻi screenings planned for late October. Dates and venues will be announced.
