Maui firefighters battle wildland brush fire off of Kūihelani Highway, south of Waikō Road

Firefighters responded to a multi-acre area of brush and grass burning in the direction of Kūihelani Highway at around 3:22 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2026.

Forward progress of the fire was halted at around 4:26 p.m. by firefighters on the ground and water drops from Air 1. Crews continue to work on full containment and extinguishment.

No structures were threatened.

The fire is located west of Kūihelani Highway and south of Waikō Road.

Responding units include Engine 10, Mini 10, Tanker 10, Engine 1, Mini 1, Engine 6, Tanker
14, Relief Tanker 50, Air 1, a battalion chief, and a fire investigator.

Due to firefighters working along the highway and smoke from the fire, Kūihelani Highway was closed in both directions for a period of time. The Kahului-bound lanes were reopened at 4:30 p.m., with the Māʻalaea-bound lanes anticipated to reopen around 5:30 p.m.

Weather on scene includes trades blowing at 10-15 mph.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
