M-4.1 earthquake south of Pāhala on Hawaiʻi Island

A magnitude-4.1 earthquake occurred 3 miles south of Pāhala on Hawaiʻi Island at around 8:36 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2026. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 8 miles below sea level, according to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. HVO scientists say the earthquake had no apparent impact on either Maunaloa or Kīlauea volcanoes.

The HVO continues to monitor Hawaiian volcanoes for any changes, noting that aftershocks are possible in the coming days to weeks. No damage to buildings or infrastructure is expected based on the earthquake’s intensity.

There were over 80 “Felt Reports” within first half hour of the quake, recorded on the USGS Did You Feel It? website.
