‘Fins & Frights’ returns Oct. 24 at Maui Ocean Center

Maui Ocean Center will host “Fins & Frights,” a family-friendly Halloween event, from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, featuring trick-or-treating, a marine-themed costume contest and Halloween cartoons in the Sphere Theater.
 
Keiki are encouraged to dress up as their favorite “Creatures of the Sea” and join marine naturalists for trick-or-treat bag decorating. A costume contest — with prizes in four categories — will be held along with a decorated pumpkin contest.
 
“I’m really looking forward to the new educational stations we will have this year,” said head naturalist McKenna Bell, who plans to dress up as a princess for the event. “From our hands-on Spooky Biofact Table to our fun Mystery Boxes, we hope to both educate and entertain.”

Community partners participating in “Fins & Frights” are The Marine Institute at Maui Ocean Center, NOAA’s Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, Stormwater Maui, Pacific Whale Foundation and the Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project.  
 
Food and drinks will be available for purchase at Reef Café. Special menu items include poke bowls, beet salad and ahi poke nachos. Those looking for dessert other than candy, can visit Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice and Maui Ocean Treasures will sell a Halloween-themed fudge.
 
Entry is $20 for adults and $10 for keiki (children ages 4-12), while admission is free for Maui Ocean Center annual members. Last entry is at 8 p.m. Tickets are now available at mauioceancenter.com.
