4 Lahaina schools to reopen Tuesday following Hurricane Nolo

The four Lahaina public schools that remained closed Monday following Hurricane Nolo will reopen to students and staff Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026.

The schools are:

• King Kamehameha III Elementary School
• Princess Nāhiʻenaʻena Elementary School
• Lahaina Intermediate School
• Lahainaluna High School

Conditions in West Maui have improved, with power restored to much of the affected area and the Olowalu brush fire now 95% contained. Evacuation orders related to the fire have also been lifted. Based on improved conditions and campus assessments, the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education has determined that all four schools can safely resume operations Tuesday.

The schools remained closed Monday due to widespread power outages, uncertainty surrounding the nearby Olowalu brush fire and concerns about maintaining reliable water service while power was unavailable.

With the reopening of the four Lahaina schools, all Hawaiʻi Island and Maui County public schools affected by Hurricane Nolo will have resumed normal operations.
