Keiki make up a proud team for last year’s 21st Annual Lahaina Town Cleanup. PC: LahainaTown Action Committee.

Volunteers, residents and visitors are welcome to participate in the 22nd Annual Lāhainā Town Cleanup from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, bringing the community together for a morning of service throughout Lahaina.

The cleanup was originally scheduled for Sept. 26, but it was rescheduled because of the approach of Hurricane Nolo.

The event is free and open to everyone who would like to participate, including residents, visitors, families, students, businesses, community organizations and groups looking for an opportunity to give back to Lahaina.

For more than two decades, volunteers have come together through the Lāhainā Town Cleanup to help care for more than 7 square miles of the community, including beaches, parks, surf spots, boat harbors, roadways and neighborhoods. Past events have brought together students, families, divers and community members in a shared effort to protect Lahaina and Maui’s coastal environment.

“This cleanup is really about everyone coming together to take care of Lāhainā,” said Tambara Garrick, event organizer with the LāhaināTown Action Committee. “Whether you live here, are visiting, need volunteer hours, are coming with your family or simply want to lend a hand, everyone is welcome. Every person who participates makes a difference.”

The 22nd Annual Lāhainā Town Cleanup is held in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup® and Mālama Maui Nui’s Get the Drift and Bag It! campaign, connecting Lahaina volunteers with a worldwide effort to remove litter and debris from beaches, waterways and coastal communities. The annual Lahaina event has long participated in both initiatives.

Volunteers will gather at the Lahaina Cannery Mall,1221 Honoapiʻilani Highway, for registration before heading out to cleanup locations stretching from Olowalu to Nāpili, from the beach to the highway and up Lahainaluna Road.

The first 300 volunteers will receive a free official event T-shirt sponsored by Maui Building Source. Volunteers can also start the morning with coffee and breakfast burritos sponsored by Pizza Paradiso, while supplies last. A water refill station sponsored by Tropic Water will be available, and DJ Ron will provide music throughout the morning.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle, gloves, reef-safe sunscreen and plenty of aloha.

Plastic pollution and marine debris remain significant challenges for oceans and coastal communities, but individual actions add up. Every bottle, piece of plastic and item of debris removed during the cleanup helps create a cleaner community and healthier environment.
