Author to speak on self-talk at Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset meeting Oct. 20

John Sherman, author of the “Talk It Up Live It Up!” book series, will speak at the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset’s meeting Oct. 20 at the YMCA West Side Resource Center in Lahaina.
His presentation is titled “Talk It Up, Live It Up! – A Subconscious Guidance System for Your Conscious Life.” According to a club announcement, Sherman will show audience members how the way they speak to themselves and others can affect their self-esteem and how others perceive them. The announcement said attendees will learn to write their own simple auto suggestions, which are short statements used to reinforce a desired mindset.
“Using imagery from their own lives, audience members will leave knowing how to write their own simple autosuggestions, and Talk It Up Live It Up! starts working the moment they start talking,” Sherman said.
Sherman holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in counseling, according to the announcement. He has coached professionals and others in Hawaiʻi, on the Mainland and in Canada for more than 20 years. He gave his first “Talk It Up Live It Up!” presentation in Waikīkī in 2004.
Sherman is the founder of John Sherman Presents Inc. He has published two books in the series and is working on a third. His writing has appeared in Civil Beat’s Community Voices.
Sherman’s journal books will be available for purchase at the meeting. The Introductory Edition and “Talk It Up Live It Up! 21” will be offered together for a special event price of $25, the announcement said.
The meeting will take place at the YMCA West Side Resource Center, in the former Tamura’s building in Emerald Plaza, at 226 Kupuohi St. A social period begins at 5 p.m., and attendees are invited to bring a dish to share at a potluck. The program runs from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
