US Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) announced that Hawai‘i is receiving nearly $81.4 million from the US Department of Transportation to cover the costs of repairs to roads, bridges, and other structures that were flooded and damaged during the Kona low storms earlier this year.

“This new federal funding will help repair storm-damaged roads and structures as recovery from this year’s historic flooding continues. We’re going to keep working to deliver federal resources so that affected communities can get back on their feet,” said Schatz.

A senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Schatz has led efforts urging federal support for Hawai‘i’s recovery from the Kona low storms and subsequent hurricanes this year, including by speaking to US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.

In addition to this funding, the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation also received  $2.3 million from the Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief Program to repair bridges on Kaua‘i damaged by flooding in 2020.
