Maui Health selects general contractor for Kula Hospital restoration; Targets late-summer 2027 reopening

Maui Health today announced it has selected Nordic PCL Construction as general contractor for the restoration and modernization of Kula Hospital, marking measurable progress toward reopening hospital services and returning care to the Kula campus. With a general contractor in place, Maui Health is now targeting a late-summer 2027 reopening.
The project includes repairs and modernization of interior spaces and essential building systems, including resident rooms, activity rooms, and nurse stations. Exterior windows and doors will be replaced with weather-protective units designed to meet historic-preservation requirements and better protect the facility from future severe weather.
“Since the storms, our focus has been on bringing Kula Hospital back to the Upcountry community,” said Wade Ebersole, CEO of Maui Health. Nordic brings deep experience building in Hawaiʻi, a strong track record for safety and quality, and a history of supporting the local workforce. We’re excited to see this work underway. Together with Nordic, we’re committed to keeping this project on track and to restoring Kula Hospital in a way that will serve our community for generations to come.”
“Nordic PCL is honored to be part of the team restoring Kula Hospital and helping return this essential healthcare resource to Upcountry Maui,” said Mike Betz, District Manager & VP, Nordic PCL Construction. “We recognize the importance of this historic facility to the community and are committed to working closely with Maui Health and our trade partners to deliver the project safely, thoughtfully and with the quality it deserves.”
The late-summer 2027 target is subject to weather, material availability, and other construction-related factors. Maui Health will share updates as work progresses, including reopening timelines for the Emergency Department and Hale Makamae.
In September, the State of Hawaiʻi, Maui Health and Kaiser Permanente announced that Kula Hospital would be restored and reopened after damage from the March 2026 Kona Low storms forced the temporary closure of the hospital, its Emergency Department and the Hale Makamae care facility. The project is preliminarily estimated at approximately $65 million, with funding from the State of Hawaiʻi and an investment from Kaiser Permanente helping to move it forward. Costs may change as construction details are finalized.
“We’re grateful to the State of Hawaiʻi, Kaiser Permanente, our legislative delegation, and county and community leaders for helping bring us to this point,” said Ebersole. “Most of all, thank you to our Kula Hospital and Hale Makamae teams, and to our residents and their families, for their patience throughout this recovery.”
Kula Clinic is open and continues to serve the Upcountry community. Kula Hospital’s Emergency Department remains temporarily closed. Anyone experiencing a medical emergency should call 911 or go to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Department.

Founded in 1910 as Kula Sanatorium, a tuberculosis treatment center, Kula Hospital has served the Upcountry Maui community for more than a century. The critical access hospital includes an Emergency Department, short-stay inpatient care, rehab, long-term skilled nursing care, and Hale Makamae, a specialized intermediate care facility for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Kula Clinic is a hospital-based outpatient clinic located adjacent to Kula Hospital, offering primary care, including Internal Medicine. Kula Hospital, its Emergency Department, and Hale Makamae have been temporarily closed since storm damage in March 2026, while Kula Clinic remains open.
