Weekend Round-Up: Wailuku Friday, Black History, Super Bowl

FEBRUARY WAILUKU FIRST FRIDAY  TOWN PARTY Friday, February 3 in Wailuku Town from 6 – 9 p.m.

This month’s Wailuku First Friday Town Party will be themed, “I ♥ Wailuku,” to show appreciation for the little town and its big improvements.

Free entertainment for the night will begin a 6 p.m. with SLAM featuring David Choy and Kelly Covington on the Maui Thing Stage, and Bad Kitty  at Wailuku Banyan Tree Park.

Maui Onstage will present a Grease Sing-a-long Movie Night and Kit Kat Cabaret Live Video Shoot at the Historic Iao Theater.

Just next door, favorite regulars Gene & Shea Argel will play to Market Street from the front of Cafe O Lei.

Visitors are encouraged to share their ideas for the future of Wailuku in ReWAILUKU, at 1980 Main St.

A Hawaiian food and Awa (Kava) bar will be set up with fresh kulolo, a Hawaiian desert made from mashed taro, at Native Intelligence on Main St.

Proceeds from the beer garden across from Cafe O Lei will go to the Hawaiian immersion program Kula Kaiapuni.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION Saturday, February 4 from 1 – 3 p.m. at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center Stage.

February is Black History Month and to kickoff African Americans on Maui Association will host a program including rap, poetry, reggae, tributes, and dance.

Speakers and performers will include Julie Frank, Gwyn Gorg, Ayin Adams, Richard Hamilton, George  and Terrie Rainey.

There will also be a historical display set up honoring Black History Month which will remain viewable until February 29.

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY XLVI 2012: NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS vs. NEW YORK GIANTS Sunday, February 5 starting at 1 p.m Pacific time.

Sports bars all over Maui will host screenings of the 2012 Superbowl to appreciate the highest level competing teams in the NFL.

The Stopwatch in Makawao will host their 18th annual Super Bowl party, where they will give away door prizes all day and serve classic Super Bowl food with flowing drinks.

Ambrosia Martini Lounge will also have a Super Bowl screening on their 12-foot movie screen with happy hour prices throughout the game and an after party starting at 10 p.m with DJ CIA.

HAPA PERFORMING LIVE Friday, February 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Stella Blues. Tickets are $30.

HAPA are the acclaimed Hawaiian music duo Bary Flanagan and Ron Kuala’au, known for their talent in combining ancient Hawaiian chanting with slack-key guitar.

ISLAND FEVER Friday, January 3 at 9 p.m. at David Paul’s Island Grill.

Maui party animals are encouraged to “dress exotic and be erotic” in this tribal dance party fundraiser for BSOS Radio, who will broadcast live from Camp Exotica at the upcoming Maui SOURCE Festival.

The event will have three open bars and two separate rooms of music: one themed cool out on the patio, and and the other feverishly hot on the dance-floor.

Raffle tickets will be sold for $10 each and drawn for a free ticket to the SOURCE

GAVINCHI BROWN WITH ROOTS N’ CREATION Saturday, February 4 at 10 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door. 

Jamaican roots reggae artists Gavinchi Brown will jam with Roots N’ Creation in a down-to-earth upcountry concert.

Brown is one of today’s authentic reggae musicians, preserving the constructs of that organic sound that keeps island-dwellers and reggae lovers asking for more.

LOVE FEST CONCERT Friday, February 3 at 9:30 p.m. at Lulu’s in Lahaina. Entrance is $20.

Local reggae band Ekolu will headline along with bands Unified Soul and Josh Tatofi.

Ekolu formed at Baldwin High School in the 90s and has since won four Hawaii Music awards.

The band is recognized for their unique blend of Hawaiian reggae. They continue to perform both locally and nationally to expand their sound.

‘GET WET’ DANCE PARTY WITH DJ CIA Saturday, February 4 at 10 p.m. at Charley’s Restaurant. Tickets are $5.

Charley’s is reviving the pastime of dancing yourself clean on a Saturday night.

“Get Wet” is an accurate theme for a Charley’s DJ dance party because that is exactly what happens on a Saturday night when you’re a room pressed against sweaty, drunk, ecstatic dancers.

If you’d rather dance than talk and the sounds are worth the sweat, this is where to be on Saturday night to “Get Wet.”
