VIDEO: Maui Waena Wins National Video Contest

Students from Maui Waena Intermediate School made an impressive showing at the 2012 Student Television Network Convention, held last week in Texas.
The video production students placed first in the Spot Feature category.
The also placed first in the Sweet 16 Broadcast Journalism contest, in which the team was given 16 hours to complete production on an entire broadcast based on a one-word topic.
Hawai’i swept the Sweet 16 category in the middle school division, with Maui Waena’s first place win, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School coming in second place, and Waianae Intermediate School in third place.
Students at Maui Waena also accepted an honorable mention award for the music video category.
Across the state, Hawaii schools brought home a total of 23 awards.
The Student Television Network Convention is a nonprofit organization that supports, promotes, and recognizes excellence in scholastic broadcasting, creative video and film making, and media convergence.
Hawaii schools took top honors in several categories including: Music Video, Spot Feature, Movie Trailer and Commercial.

Maui Waena Intermediate School:

Waianae High School:
- 1st place – Spot Feature
- 2nd place – Broadcast News writing
- 2nd place – Public Service Announcement
- 2nd place – Laptop Journalist
- 3rd place – Sixty Second Silent Film
- Honorable Mention – Standup
- 2nd place – Sweet 16 Broadcast Journalism
- Honorable Mention – Sweet 16 Film
Waianae Intermediate School:
- 1st place – Commercial
- Honorable Mention – Spot Feature
- Honorable Mention – Music Video
- Honorable Mention – Anchoring
- 3rd place – Sweet 16 Broadcast Journalism
Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School:
- 1st place – Movie Trailer
- 2nd place – Sweet 16 Broadcast Journalism

Moanalua High School:
- 1st place – Commercial
- Honorable Mention – Commentary
Kauai High School:
- 3rd place – Sweet 16 Broadcast Journalism
An estimated 1,900 students and teachers from middle and high schools across the nation attended the STN Convention. The convention included breakout sessions taught by industry professionals.
Professionals within the television news industry judged the onsite contests.
