$2.8 Million Road Repair Project Proposed in Kahakuloa

The County of Maui, Department of Public Works proposes to conduct roadway repairs to a section of Kahekili Highway between Mile Markers 15 and 16 in the Kahakuloa district of Maui.

The $2.8 million repair project seeks to address sections of the road have been worn down due to repeated use, with numerous cracks and fissures within the asphalt.

County of Maui Public Works Director, David Goode, drafted a letter to state officials indicating a review of the project’s Draft Environmental Impact Statement has been made, and the county anticipates a Finding of No Significant Impact.

The proposed project consists of re-compacting and re-paving eroded asphalt concrete, constructing a slope tie-back system along the makai areas of the road, paving turnout areas, and resurfacing asphalt.

The stretch of roadway slated for repairs includes the segment between mile markers 15 and 16.  The section of road is located on the north side of Waihali Gulch, just north of Kahakuloa Village on Conservation Lands that overlook Kahakuloa Bay.

The Kahekili Highway runs along Maui’s northwest coast, and provides an alternate access from Wailuku-Waiheʻe area to West Maui.

If all permits are secured, the project is expected to start in 2012 and take six months to complete.
