Amanda Kayatani and Joey Santos of Pukalani say they don’t eat out much, but when they do they drive themselves and their young sons to Peggy Sue’s in Kihei.

“I know it’s always going to be good,” Kayatani said on a recent Sunday morning at the ‘50s-‘60s themed diner. Santos regularly orders “The Big Bopper,” a juicy bacon cheeseburger while Kayatani takes in her favorite  “Good Golly Miss Molly” burger, a teriyaki-pineapple burger.

“We like the burgers,” Santos said. “I like the teriyaki sauce and the onion rings,” Kayatani added.

Owned and operated by Rose and Dan Bennett of South Maui, Peggy Sue’s serves up a variety of burgers, specialty sandwiches, milkshakes and malts.

Entrees served with two scoops of rice and one scoop of potato salad include barbecue ribs, grilled island fish, teriyaki chicken and chili and rice. Salads include garden and Caesar, with the option of adding tuna, teriyaki chicken, steak or fish.

Visitors Tim and Mary Door of Kansas City, Kansas, were on their sixth trip to Maui. They said they’ve made Peggy Sue’s a regular stop when they visit and they tell their friends about it all the time.

“The nostalgia, the throwback to the ‘50s and ‘60s, we grew up in places like this,” Tim Door said about Peggy Sue’s. “And the food’s good,” Mary Door added.

The couple ate two entries of “The King,” a large juicy burger they ordered with potato salad. One of them drank their food down with a chocolate malt and the other had a chocolate milkshake.

Open 11 a.m. -9 p.m. weekdays; 11 a.m.-10 p.m. weekends.
