Habitat for Humanity Proposes Construction of Kahawai Condos
By Wendy Osher
Habitat for Humanity Maui is proposing the development of a 16 unit condominium building in Wailuku near Happy Valley.
The three-story Hale Kahawai Condominium is planned for location at 2024 Kahawai Street along ‘Iao Stream.
The subject property is currently vacant and was formerly occupied by a single-family residence that was demolished in 1993.
Since then, the property has been cleared and graded.
It is bordered by Kahawai Street to the south and Lewa Place to the west.
The three-story building would be comprised of two stories of condominium units over ground floor parking for 20 vehicles.
The proposed project includes 12 one-bedroom, one-bathroom units; and four two-bedroom, one- bathroom units. The units range from 595 square feet for a one-bedroom unit to 874 square feet for a two-bedroom unit.
Proposed site improvements include grading and utilities installation of onsite water, sewer, and drainage systems. Electrical, telephone, and cable utility systems will be installed from the existing overhead facilities servicing the project area.
A Draft Environmental Assessment was prepared for the project with an anticipated finding of No Significant Impact. A 30-day public review and comment period ends on May 23, 2012.
