Maui Brewing Wins Award at World Beer Cup

Maui Brewing Company, a Lahaina-based brewery with a brewpub in Kahana, recently claimed a bronze medal in the 2012 World Beer Cup.

Maui Brewing Company was awarded a bronze medal in Category 55, the Belgian-Style Witbier beer style category, for its La Perouse White.

“I think it’s pretty cool that if you happened to get any La Perouse this spring in cans, you got to taste the very same beer the judges did,” said Garrett Marrero, founder of Maui Brewing Company, in a written statement. “I’m also very proud our team. Kim Lutz, in particular, deserves special recognition for developing this beer.”

This beer is brewed using wheat and Belgian Pilsner malt and spiced with coriander and fresh, local mandarin orange peel. La Perouse White was named after a bay located in South Maui. This same beer also won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival last October. La Perouse White was Maui Brewing Co.’s second limited canned release.

The World Beer Cup is a global beer competition presented by the Brewers Association that evaluates beers from around the world and recognizes the most outstanding brewers and their beers.

Gold, silver and bronze awards in the competition’s 95 beer-style categories were presented on May 5, 2012 during the World Beer Cup Gala Awards Dinner at the Town and Country Resort in San Diego, California.

World Beer Cup winners were selected by an international panel of 211 beer judges from 27 countries. The competition, referred to as the “Olympics of Beer Competition”, saw an impressive field of 3,921 entries from 799 breweries in 54 countries.

The 2012 competition drew the largest, most international field of entrants in the history of the World Beer Cup, a competition held every other year since 1996.
