The Queen Ka’ahumanu Center was developed in 1972 by Dillingham Land Corporation, the same developer of the Ala Moana Center on Oahu.

During its grand opening celebration in 1974, there were a total of 48 stores. Now, four decades later, the center has over 100 stores, restaurants, theaters and services, and is host to over 200 community events each year.

In honor of the 40th celebration, a historical photo display has been placed in the window across from the customer service center near center court. The display features interviews with employees and community members, “Share Your Story” stories and pictures, and photographs of the center throughout the year, compliments of photographer Wayne Tanaka.

“We wanted to involve the community in our celebration of 40 years on Maui,” said Lisa Paulson, marketing manager. “We had an overwhelming response from people wanting to share their memories for our celebration. It made us realize that Queen Ka’ahumanu Center truly is an integral part of the community.”
