The Sugar Cane Train on Maui was involved in an afternoon accident with a sedan on Tuesday, September 11, 2012.

Maui police say the vehicle, a 2001 Honda sedan, was traveling East on Puukolii Road, when it failed to come to a stop at the train crossing. As a result, the vehicle drove into the path of the oncoming train, which was traveling in the Honokowai direction, said Maui Police Lt. Wayne Ibarra.

The accident was reported at 4:35 p.m. on Tuesday at the Puukolii Road intersection with the Honoapiilani Highway (Hwy 30) in Ka’anapali.

According to the police report, all of the train’s signals were working and all of the standard precautionary measures in accordance with Federal Guidelines were observed by the train’s engineer and crew, said Lt. Ibarra.

Officials said no injuries were reported, and only minor damages were reported to both the vehicle and the train.
