Arguably, one could add “-tober” to any word and create a new “what are you talking about?” term. Makawao has realized this as well, and Third Friday Makawao has a “Maktober Fest” theme. Celebrate the harvest season with a pumpkin patch, “Maktober” style beer specials and more.Benny Uyetake & Friends take the main stage starting at 6:30 p.m. The Casanova Stage features Soulyx from 7-9 p.m. and an after party with Ekolu starting at 9:30 p.m.Streets between Brewer and Makawao will close at 5:30pm. |

On the west side? The fourth Annual Lahaina Plantation Daysis this weekend, as well. It’s being held next to the historic Pioneer Mill Smokestack on Lahainaluna Road from 5 – 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. There will be a Maui Brewing Company beer garden; a Portuguese cultural tent; historical displays and exhibits in the Plantation Life Tent; live performances; and food vendors including Aloha Mixed Plate, Leilani’s on the Beach, Sansei, Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop, and Teddy’s Bigger Burgers.Admission is $3 per night. |

The MACC is hosting a benefit gala for Soaring Voices, an international traveling museum exhibition displaying the rich and innovative ceramic culture of Japan through the exquisite works of four generations of 25 female artists. The women work in both sculptural and traditional forms in a field generally dominated by men. This benefit gala will begin with a champagne reception and preopening gallery walk-through with the Soaring Voices exhibition curators and artists from Japan, followed by dinner created by Chef Sheldon Simeon of Old Lāhainā Lū‘au. Enjoy live entertainment by award-winning recording artist and Kumu Hula Nāpua Makua.Tickets are $250 per person. |

The Asian Blend, Hawaii’s longest running contemporary dance band, will celebrate their 40th anniversary with a Food and Music day/night festival at the Maui Tropical Plantation. The festival begins at 11 a.m. and will feature a cooking demonstration and “tapas” by Sheraton Waikiki’s Senior Executive Sous chef Colin Hazama. At 5 p.m., the cooking demonstration will begin with samplings from various Maui restaurants.At 7 p.m. the party will move indoors to the Tropical Showroom for Dancemusic furnished by Asian Blend and the Deja Vu Band.Tickets are $75 with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the art program at BHS. |

For the past 39 years, the J.W. Cameron Center has provided an affordable home for 16 critically important nonprofit/community agencies that serve over 30,000 Maui families every year. This Saturday at 6 p.m., the Cameron Center hosts their Annual Fundraising Benefit with the theme “Casino Night Fundraiser! Viva Las Vegas!” It promises to be a memory-filled evening with live music, a dinner, dancing and exciting Las Vegas Style fun. There will be legal gambling tables including Black Jack, Roulette, Craps, Texas Hold’em, Let It Ride, Poker, Bingo, and Silent and Live Auctions. Individual Tickets are $125 each or $1,500 for a table for 12. |

Stella Blues is kicking off a concert series where its favorite artists are coming to Maui every month for the next few months in a row. Oahu’s John Cruz takes the stage Saturday night. He was named the Best Singer Songwriter by Hawaii Magazine in 2008. This reputation became even more solidified when he released his long-awaited second album, One of These Days in 2007. It debuted at #6 on the Billboard World Chart, and Honolulu Magazine named the album one of the “Top 25 Greatest Hawaii Albums of the New Century” in 2012. Dinner and show: 6 p.m., $60. The Haku Baldwin Center in Makawao is holding a Fall Harvest Festival. There will be pony rides, a petting zoo, games, vendors, and more. Events run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include a farmer’s market, bake sale, face painting, and a Keiki Halloween Costume Contest at 1 p.m. for babies through 12 year olds. Haku Baldwin Center is located at 444 Makawao Avenue, below Makawao Vet Clinic. The event is free to the public and parking is $3 per vehicle. |

Soaring Voices, the international traveling museum exhibitionfeaturing the ceramic works of four generations of Japanese artists, continues at the MACC. Guest speakers at Sunday’s day-long symposium include: Hiroko Miura – Co-curator of the Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art at Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. Maya Nishi – Co-curator and president of hus-10, Inc. Joan B. Mirviss – A leading expert in Japanese art, specializing in modern and contemporary ceramics, ukiyo-e prints, paintings, and screens.Anne Nishimura Morse – The William and Helen Pounds Senior Curator of Japanese Art, Art of Asia, Oceania, and Africa at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.Tickets are $30 each. |
