A+ December And New Year Swells

The month of December has been very gracious for surf, especially on the Christmas weekend. A powerful N/NW was on offer for the 25th that saw surfers flock to Maui’s premier wave on the west side, Honolua Bay.
Some were calling it “as good as it gets,” and a bunch more other superlatives that prove the same point. To put it simply, it was A+ Honolua Bay.
There is always a doubt about surfing on Christmas as opposed to spending time with the family, but when that consists of eating massive amounts of food and watching TV all day, then sneaking out for a surf doesn’t sound all that bad, especially for Honolua.
The Bay was epic on the 25th with minimal crowds. Everyone there was getting barreled until the sun disappeared below the horizon, and every wave was wide open. Nothing better than Christmas tubes!
And the action is just getting started a series of gigantic swells are about to blast the islands. The first one, a 30+ foot N/NW, hits Friday (12/28). The second swell is set to hit Sunday (12/30). A massive 40 foot NW is expected to hang around in size until Monday and into the new year.
It is going to be huge, so get your big boards ready. If you don’t have one, get one. If you don’t want to get one, find somewhere else to surf because all of the main spots will be undoubtedly out of control. 
Usually when there is a swell this large that hits the islands, a great deal of wrapping happens as the huge swell sort of blankets the islands and bends into areas where smaller swells wouldn’t reach.
The last big swell saw the upper west side of Maui around Kaanapali and Napili side firing with perfect overhead surf. These areas normally don’t light up unless a huge swell wraps in there.
And, to make matters better, the wind is expected to lighten up as well for the massive swells of the weekend. So we could be seeing massive surf with perfect conditions.
Rumors are spreading around that the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational will be held on one of these days because they need a proper 30 foot swell to hold it at one of Oahu’s famous big wave spots, Waimea Bay.
As if that wasn’t enough, the Red Bull Jaws Contest is set to go off with the massive swells on the way.
So don’t miss the action. Some history will be made at Jaws, guaranteed.
