Maui Doctors Read Dr. Seuss to Island Keiki

Twenty medical professionals joined in the Read Across America celebration at five Maui schools on Friday, as part of the national effort to advance student achievement and invest in public education.

The team of 20 physicians, nurses, staff and management at Maui Memorial Medical Center spent the day reading Dr. Seuss books to 65 different classes of kindergarteners and first graders.

In addition to reading, the team of volunteers from MMMC also offered tips to students about living a healthy and leading a successful life by eating right, establishing goals, and doing well in school.

Each participating student received a reading certificate and snacked on healthy muffins as part of the program.  By the end of the day, MMMC had handed out 1,400 reading certificates, 1,400 muffins, and 65 Dr. Seuss books–one for each class.

Read Across America is held annually during the first week of March in conjunction with Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  It was established by the National Education Association Foundation as part of its effort to prepare each of America’s children to learn and thrive in a rapidly changing world.

MMMC was the only organization on Maui officially registered as a participant this year.
