House Honors Loque as Maui District Teacher of Year

The state House of Representatives honored Aaron Loque as the Maui District Teacher of the Year during a certificate presentation on the House floor today.

Loque, who is a social studies teacher for seventh graders at Maui Waena Intermediate School in Kahului, was among seven District Teachers of the Year selected from throughout the state. Karen Kutsunai, a Kailua Intermediate teacher, was the Windward District Teacher of the Year, and was selected as the overall 2013 State Teacher of the Year for the state of Hawai’i.

“Aaron is one of many quality educators who in addition to school involvement is also an active contributor to the community by coaching youth baseball in the Pono Athletic Club,” said Rep McKelvey in a media statement today.

“He personally demonstrates the value of a healthy lifestyle by coaching as well as teaching our keiki during the critical middle school years when they thrive in the presence of good role models and reminders of concrete goals,” added Rep. McKelvey.

Loque has been employed at Maui Waena since 2002, and prior to that, taught 6th grade social studies and science at Kalama Intermediate School.

He earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Hawaii at Hilo, teaching certification from the University of Phoenix-Maui, and a master’s degree in education from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa.

In addition to work in the classroom, Loque is also credited with supervising summer credit recovery classes, developing school-wide transition plans for students, and serving on the accreditation committee.
