Wailea Tennis Tournament to benefit Maui firefighters
Tennis players are invited to register for the Wailea Fall Doubles Tennis Tournament, scheduled Nov. 9-11, 2024, at the Wailea Tennis Club. Benefitting the Maui County Firefighter’s Relief Association, the weekend sports event includes two days of doubles and mixed doubles action at the Wailea Tennis Club plus a silent auction and players dinner party featuring a buffet, open bar and live music.
12 recruits graduate from basic training, as the state looks to fill hundreds of adult corrections officer vacancies across the state
Twelve graduates from Basic Corrections Recruit Class completed training and will begin their careers as corrections officers in facilities across Hawaiʻi, including one graduate who has been assigned to the Maui Community Correctional Center in Wailuku. Currently, there are nearly 370 vacant ACO positions of the estimated 1,500 authorized ACO positions.
Hawaiʻi Youth Transportation Council established for climate mitigation
The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is inviting youth ages 11 to 24 on all islands to apply to serve on the inaugural Hawaiʻi Youth Transportation Council. The deadline to apply is Nov. 25.
Maui set for another fast EV charging station, part of 11 station build-out statewide
On Friday, the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation opened its second electric vehicle charging station in the state funded by the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program. The $3.5 million station opened at 8 a.m. at Aloha Tower Marketplace on O‘ahu.

Television and FOX Entertainment, hired over 2,100 local cast and crew to be part of the first season. Collectively, the hires earned more than $31.75 million in wages.

61-year-old man critically injured, bit by shark at Waiehu, Maui
Maui emergency crews responded to a report of a shark attack incident in the area known as “Sand Piles” at Waiehu on Maui at around 7:08 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, 2024. The 61-year-old male patient was transported in critical condition to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room with injuries to his leg, authorities tell Maui Now. He remains at the hospital where he is receiving further care.

The Lahaina-led nonprofit organization, Kaibigan ng Lahaina, is set to host a free “Lahaina Palengke Night” with business and community fellowship from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Princess Nahi’ena’ena Elementary School. Parking is free, but limited.
County of Maui offices closed for Election Day, Nov. 5
County of Maui offices, including the Office of Recovery – West Maui at Lahaina Gateway and the Recovery Permit Center at the County of Maui Service Center in Kahului, will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024, for the Election Day holiday.
Catholic Charities Hawai‘i leadership transition announced
Catholic Charities Hawai‘i’s Rob Van Tassell will retire as president and chief executive officer on Jan. 6, the nonprofit’s board of directors announced Wednesday. He will be succeeded by current Chief Operating Officer Tina Andrade, making her the first female and Native Hawaiian leader of the organization.
DBEDT report: September visitor arrivals up from last year, but not at pre-pandemic levels
Maui visitor arrivals in September are up dramatically, compared to last year, a month after the August 2023 wildfires, according to a monthly report by the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. But the rebound has not reached pre-pandemic levels.
