Natalie Ai Kamauu, born to renowned kumu hula Howard and Olana Ai, was raised in the world of hula. Immersed in the art form from an early age, she served as her parents’ assistant and model in class, teaching her fi rst hula at just 11 years old. By 15, she began singing and playing music with her father, performing at various events, including shows, conferences, and conventions. Her love for Hawaiian music and dance has taken her across the United States, Asia, and Polynesia.
After graduating from high school in 1986, Natalie was given her fi rst teaching assignment: a children’s `ukulele class. At 20, her parents entrusted her with leading a boy’s hula team, adding three more titles to their six consecutive wins at the Queen Liliʻuokalani Keiki Hula Competition.
In 1990, Natalie achieved the prestigious title of Miss Aloha Hula at the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, often regarded as the Olympics of hula. That same year, she represented Hawai‘i internationally with the Hawaii Tourism Agency. In 1991, she married Dale Iolani Kamauu, son of hula master Hoakalei Kamauu. Together, they began performing and building their family, with their children, Chaz and Sha-Lei, often joining them on stage.
While cultivating her singing career, Natalie continued teaching through Hālau Hula Olana, guiding many groups to success in local hula competitions. She also worked as an elementary school teacher in the State of Hawaii’s Hawaiian Studies program and taught hula and chant at Leeward Community College.
In 2005, Natalie and Iolani founded Keko Records, launching her solo career with her fi rst Hawaiian music album. Since then, she has won six Female Vocalist of the Year awards at the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, making her the only individual to hold both the Miss Aloha Hula title and multiple Hōkū awards.
Responding to popular demand, Natalie and Iolani extended their teaching to Japan, where their hula school, Hula ʻIlaniwai, continues to grow. Today, Natalie remains a prominent performer and guest instructor across Hawai‘i, Mexico, China, and Japan, sharing her passion for Hawaiian culture worldwide.
