Maui Chinese Unique Historical Exhibit
Maui Chinese Historical & Cultural Exhibit to display at the Maui Chinese New Year Festival 2024. For the past 14 years, Ron and Leola Muromoto of Kula have been collecting, archiving, and researching old photographs, documents as well as artifacts of Chinese on Maui. Most of which belonged to their grandparent Wing Kong Dang of Wailuku. They have documented the Chinese Community in Wailuku and their connection to China, and how our Maui Chinese immigrants helped finance the Ten Revolutions to establish China as a democratic country under Dr. Sun-Yat Sen.
"Our research is ongoing." said Ron Muromoto, "With the help of Maui families who were willing to share their family stories, we have updated this exhibit every year."
They have presented the Chinese Historical and Cultural Exhibit for the past 10 Years at the Annual Chinese New Year Festivities as well as events at the Kaunoa Senior Center and the Hale Hō`ike`ike (Bailey House Museum). Every year their exhibit grows and evolves as more documents and artifacts are collected.
The exhibit is scheduled to debut at the Maui Chinese New Year Festival, Saturday, February 10, 2024 at the Maui Mall Village 9am-2pm. For the first time ever, this exhibit will be made available for the public after the Festival through a special partnership with Maui Mall.
