Join us for a special evening of music with Sean Na'auao.
Located in the Lower Valley Performance Area.
Sean Na‘auao… singer, musician, composer, producer.
There seems to be no end to this multi-talented local artist who in a short period of time, has climbed to the top of the ladder of success in Hawaiian music and raised the standards for other musicians to follow.
Sean Na‘auao’s traditional Hawaiian music foundation began as a boy. Guided by his father and encouraged by his family, he also learned how to play jazz and reggae developing him as a well-rounded musician. The songs on Sean’s releases reflect those influences: he is able to masterfully perform traditional Hawaiian songs and slide deftly into the contemporary up-tempo beat of today’s Hawaiian music. Sean has taken his music around the world, performing in Mexico, Japan, Guam and across the United States including a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
As an artist so competent in his musical talent and with so many musical accomplishments, Sean has also excelled as a music producer. Over the years he has lent his support to up and coming musicians looking for a suitable experienced hand to guide them, including Three Plus, Darren Benitez, Baba B, Robert Kekaula, Ho‘onu‘a and Mino‘aka.
Embracing his Hawaiian heritage, Sean Na`auao has always connected his own music back to his kupuna (his ancestors and elders). Kumu Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett has been a positive influence on his traditional Hawaiian career. In 2001, Sean won a Nä Hökü Hanohano Award for “Song of the Year '' for Frank’s composition “Ka Pilina,” from the album Neutralize It. Then in 2002 Sean’s version of “Aloha Ku`u Home A I Ke `Alohi” from his album Holomua, also by Frank, won “Haku Mele '' at the Nä Hökü Hanohano Awards.
His professional musical career was established following high school as part of Mana‘o Company, a group that broke into the contemporary Hawaiian music scene as this genre of music was gaining popularity among the young island crowd. Mana‘o Company recorded two successful CDs and launched Sean into a remarkable career as a solo recording artist.
His solo career kicked off with two releases (Giving Something Back and Hawaiian Living) in the mid-1990s. The release of his Fish and Poi album in 1997 earned him a prestigious Nä Hökü Hanohano award for Island Contemporary Album of the Year. It marked the emergence of Sean as a formidable influence in local contemporary Hawaiian music, and set the standard that musicians aspire to today.
Homegrown Hawaiian, released in 1998, only served to cement his success. Even today, half of the songs from Homegrown Hawaiian are played regularly on local radio, an amazing feat in the competitive fight for airplay. Sean’s unique style on songs like “Drop Baby Drop,” “Li Hing Hula,” “Punani Patrol” and “E Ku‘u Sweet Lei Poina‘ole” keeps Homegrown Hawaiian on the list of “coveted” recordings.
