Kanikapila, gathering together to play music, has been a well-loved traditional Hawaiian pastime. It’s these types of impromptu jam sessions that create an exceptionally rare evening on the islands. Maui’s musical treasure, Uncle Benny Uyetake, re-imagines Kanikapila evenings in Wailea with storytelling and world-class music. Through the Aloha Music Series, Uncle Benny will introduce you to the new sounds from the islands and transport you to old Hawaiʻi as he hosts both upcoming artists and some of Hawaiʻi’s legends.

Born and raised on the beautiful island of Maui, Kevin Brown has been playing Hawaiian Slack Key music for more than 50 years. Kevin grew up surrounded by music. His father, Harry Brown Sr., was a musician in the 1940’s. Kevin carried on the musical traditions. In the early 1970’s he played Hawaiian music with the popular group, Waiehu Sons. In 1991, Kevin continued on the music circuit, this time as a father and son duo. Together with his son Ikaika Brown, they released numerous CDs, bringing themselves Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards and Grammy nominations. In 2020 Kevin and Ikaika were the first ever father and son to be honored with the Nā Hōkū Hanohano, Slack Key (Kī Hō’alu) Legacy Award.
