The Jazz Maui 2024 Maui Music Series presents “More Classics from the Blue Note Jazz Era” with trumpeter Steve Dubey and The Maui Jazz Elements featuring John Zangrando on sax and flute, Mark Johnstone on piano, Ian Sheridan on bass, and Paul Marchetti on drums. Tickets are available at www.ProArtsMaui.org.
The second in a series, this evening of music celebrates the classic period of Blue Note Records and commemorates the 85th founding of the company. The Blue Note record company released more than 1000 albums from 1949 to 1966, and 900 of them have been labeled ”classics” in the history of American jazz music. Legendary jazz icons such as Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Cannonball Adderly, Hank Mobley, Ron Carter, Freddie Hubbard, Max Roach, Thelonious Monk and many more were recorded and their music preserved by Blue Note for future jazz lovers. The May 11th concert is an homage to the legacy of the artists who created the Blue Note sound and shaped this unique American tradition.
Trumpeter Steve Dubey has been an active member of the music community on the island of Kauai for the last three decades. He has appeared with many resident and visiting artists such as Michael Ruff, Lao Tizer, Tierney Sutton, Gabriel Espinosa, Taj Mahal, Howard Levy (of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones), and others. He has been a pillar in Kauai's premier latin jazz/salsa ensemble Rumba De Fuego. More recently, he has appeared as a guest artist with Maui's own Angela and Phil Benoit, both on Maui and their West Coast tours.
The Jazz Maui 2024 Maui Music Festival is supported by Hawaii Tourism Authority through the Community Enrichment Program.
