HISAKO Film Lab is a non-profit program coming from HISAKO Productions, a production company created by Maui-born filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) in collaboration with UHMC Academy For Creative Media. The summer lab program is an advanced filmmaking program that offered an in-depth immersion for motivated high school students eager to elevate their storytelling and production skills in an exciting, project-based environment. Students received guidance and feedback throughout the process and were joined in-person and virtually by industry professional guest speakers. This year we were lucky to have writers Rachel Kondo & Justin Marks (Shōgun), writers Aaron & Jordan Kandell (Moana), costume designer Joy Cretton (American Born Chinese), hair stylist Christy Tagatac (The L Word), editor Gina Sansom (American Born Chinese), writer/director Ty Sanga (Hokule‘a: Finding the Language of the Navigator), director/producer Stefan Schaefer (Epic Swim Maui), and HIFF programmer Melina Coumas.
