Jazz Maui and ProArts present Kansas City Jazz with the Angela Ward Quartet at 7:30pm on Friday, October 2, 2026 at ProArts Playhouse, 1280 S. Kihei Road, Kihei. Kansas City-based pianist Angela Ward plays a wide variety of fusion and smooth jazz, with a touch of R&B and Latin music. Drummer Indio, saxophonist John Zangrando, and bassist Dave Graber make up the rest of the Quartet. For tickets go to ProArtsMaui.org.
Keyboardist, composer, and producer, Angela Ward performs regularly around the Kansas City metropolitan area and is known for the rare blend of fusion, jazz, gospel, and classical she brings to everything she plays. She was awarded Favorite Jazz Keyboard/Organ Player by the Kansas City Jazz Ambassadors 2022 and voted Kansas City’s Favorite Pianist in 2023. She served as Musical Director of the Sun Flower Music Festival in Topeka, Kansas honoring African American Composers, and was featured with the City Light Jazz Orchestra in a tribute to Black Female Composers during Women in Jazz month. Recently Angela was awarded the “Kindest Kansas Citian Award” and will serve as Music Director for the Kansas City Rep Theater.
Angela Ward is a graduate of Florida A&M University and writes and arranges for the internationally known JWB, also known as The James Ward Band. She has arranged and recorded two projects with The JWB entitled "In Perspective" and "Groove Axis", that both hit the top 20 of the Smooth Jazz Chart. In addition to performing, she serves as Program Director and Teaching Artist for the Comprehensive Arts Institute with the mission to develop the next generation of youth with interest in music arts. She established the Instrumental Music Workshop entitled “Show and Shed” in 2014, and she continues to spearhead sustainable music education initiatives in the Kansas City Metropolitan area.
The other members of the quartet are Maui-based musicians. Indio is a Maui-born Native Hawaiian multi-instrumentalist and drummer who frequently performs in the local jazz and acoustic music scene. While active as a drummer, he is also a skilled guitarist, composer, and vocalist.
John Zangrando, or “Johnny Z,” came to Maui in 1980 from New York and has been one of the busiest sax players on the island since. He has played or recorded with George Benson, John Mayall, Michael McDonald, Dionne Warwick, and Gladys Knight. He has also played with Dr. Lonnie Smith, Danny Gottlieb and Mark Egan of Elements and was musical director for singer Jon Hendricks for his Hawaii tour. Johnny Z plays tenor, alto, soprano, baritone and bass saxophones, as well as flute, piccolo, bass clarinet and electronic wind instrument (EWI).
David Graber, upright and electric bass, is originally from Winnipeg Manitoba Canada and now lives with his wife, Emelyn, on Maui. David has played jazz, Latin, and contemporary music styles in festivals throughout western Canada and the USA including aboard Carnival Cruise Lines. He has performed on recordings and has played with artists such as Sheryl Renee, Larry Coryell, Eric Marienthal, Willie K, Delfeayo Marsalis, Fareed Haque, Mark Gabriel Hasselbach, and Glen Goto to name a few.
