Experience an unforgettable evening of classical ballet that celebrates the dedication, creativity, and passion of our Maui dance community.
Alexander Academy Performing Company is thrilled to present the timeless ballet La Bayadère—a captivating tale of love, betrayal, and redemption set in ancient India. This full-length production will take place on May 31st and June 1st at Seabury Hall’s ‘A’ali‘ikūhonua Creative Arts Center, showcasing the extraordinary talent of AAPA’s dancers in a visually stunning performance. The production features exquisite costumes by Jennifer Oberg and her Sewing Hui, and masterful choreography by Absalon Figueroa, Amelia Nelson, and Hallie Hunt.
Originally choreographed by Marius Petipa in 1877 at the Imperial Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre in Saint Petersburg, La Bayadère tells the story of Nikiya, a temple dancer, and her tragic love affair with the warrior Solor. AAPA’s production brings new life to this classic, with choreography by Artistic Director Absalon Figueroa, alongside contributions from AAPA faculty members Amelia Nelson and Hallie Hunt. Under the direction of Danelle Keenan Watson, Alexander Academy’s dedicated dancers have been preparing for months to bring this masterpiece to life.
“La Bayadère offers a rich narrative that captivates audiences, from an exotic setting to the dreamlike Kingdom of the Shades,” says Artistic Director Absalon Figueroa. “The ballet has a wide range of roles whose emotional intensity gives dancers a chance to really dive into character work. Presenting a classical work like La Bayadère allows us to honor ballet tradition while also bringing fresh life to it.”
This year, La Bayadère was specially chosen by AAPA’s graduating seniors: Kewen Imlay, Genevieve Kermode, Anuhea Kelly, and Macie Madaus—a meaningful choice to celebrate the completion of their dance journey with the Academy. These dancers will also take on principal roles: Kewen Imlay and Genevieve Kermode will both perform as Nikiya, Anuhea Kelly will portray Gamzatti alongside Adelle Fabbio, and Macie Madaus will embody the High Priestess.
AAPA is thrilled to welcome back professional ballet dancer Eric Osterkil, who joined the academy for The Nutcracker in December 2024. Eric brings experience performing in prestigious venues like the National Gallery and Bryant Park, and a background in leading classical roles and working with renowned choreographers, we are fortunate to have him return. He will grace the stage as Prince Solor alongside the AAPA cast.
A true highlight of the show is seeing the full range of talent across all age levels—AAPA's youngest dancers, ages 3–6, will charm audiences as Hummingbirds and Exotic Birds.
