Maui High School Celebrates Hall of Honor Class of 2024
Maui High School proudly celebrates the achievements of five distinguished alumni and faculty members in the Hall of Honor Class of 2024. These individuals have been recognized for their outstanding contributions across education, community service, arts, and business, reflecting the school's commitment to excellence and the spirit of Saber pride.
The five recipients, all of whom are Maui High School alumni, will be recognized at the 13th annual Hall of Honor banquet held on October 1, 2024. The festivities will take place in the Izumi “Shine” Atsui Athletic Center.
Ms. Michele Sera, an esteemed educator from the class of 1982 with over three decades at Maui High School, has been honored with the Inspiration Award. Known for her innovative teaching methods and unwavering dedication, Ms. Sera has not only excelled in teaching mathematics but has also fostered a nurturing environment where students thrive. As the advisor of the Maui High School Math Club, she has guided her students to numerous victories, showcasing leadership beyond the classroom. Her impact extends far beyond academic achievements, as she is known for her personal connections with students and commitment to their holistic development.
Lloyd Inouye, a proud graduate of Maui High School's class of 1967, embodies the Saber Spirit Award through his longstanding dedication to the school community. Serving on the Maui High School Foundation board for many years, Lloyd has been instrumental in fundraising efforts and event coordination, including the Old Maui High Centennial reunion. His generosity and volunteerism have enriched the school's cultural and social landscape, fostering a sense of pride and camaraderie among students and alumni alike.
Robert H. Hughes, a distinguished alumnus from the class of 1934, receives the Silversword Heritage Award in recognition of his multifaceted contributions to Hawai'i. Starting his career as a night sugar boilerman at HC&S, Robert's journey led him to become Executive Vice-President of C. Brewer and President of the HSPA. Beyond his corporate success, he played pivotal roles in education and community service, serving as Maui Regent of the University of Hawai'i and Trustee of the UH Foundation. His commitment to historic preservation through organizations like the Friends of Lahaina Restoration reflects his dedication to preserving Hawai'i's cultural heritage.
Jackie Pias Carlin, acclaimed author and artist from the class of 1966, is honored with the Award of Excellence for her profound impact on literature and art. Inspired by her upbringing in Hawaii and experiences abroad, Jackie's artistic journey has been characterized by vibrant watercolors, silk paintings, and Hawaiian kapa that celebrate Maui's natural beauty. Her works have been featured prominently, including a highlight at the Nevada State Museum for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Jackie remains deeply connected to her alma mater and continues to inspire through her creative endeavors and community leadership.
Lester Hamai, prominent business and community leader hails from the Class of 1935. At a time when most people begin planning for retirement, Lester took a leap of faith and established Hamai Appliance in 1969. This family owned business has provided our community with quality appliances and exceptional customer service for three generations. Lester made sure that his customers had the latest and greatest technology of its time, from the introduction of the fax machine to the microwave oven. Lestar’s legacy continues within our community till this day. Lester Hamai and Hamai Appliance has raised over $100,000 for local non profits and he was a strong supporter of the Makawao Hongwanji Mission, Boy Scouts of America and women’s golf program.
The Maui High School Hall of Honor Class of 2024 exemplifies the school's legacy of producing leaders and visionaries who make significant contributions locally and beyond. Their achievements underscore the values of excellence, service, and innovation that continue to define the spirit of Maui High School, inspiring current and future generations of Sabers.
The Maui High School Foundation is a nonprofit 501c (3) whose mission is to promote and foster the development of Maui High School.
The Foundation established Maui High’s Hall of Honor in 2011 to annually recognize individuals with ties to Maui High School who have made outstanding contributions to the legacy of the school and community. The Hall of Honor Awards Banquet serves as the Foundation’s primary fundraiser to support its mission.
