US Sen. Brian Schatz conducted site visits on the Valley Isle on Wednesday, focused on the progress of recovery efforts on Maui, following the 2023 wildfires and recent Kona Low storms in March of this year.

South Kīhei has been identified by MEMA as an area at high-risk of flooding due to significant sediment accumulation from the recent kona low storm. Ongoing cleanup efforts are focused on restoring drainage capacity, but elevated flood risk remains. Other areas of moderate-risk include ʻĪao, East Molokaʻi, Lahaina, and East Maui.

Hawai‘i Nature Center’s highly anticipated outdoor Nature Adventure Camp returns this summer for five weeks of camp in partnership with Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge. Enrollment opens today for this hands-on, outdoor program for keiki, ages 6 to 11, with an immersive experience that promotes environmental stewardship and a love for nature.

Staff from the Maui Department of Water Supply recently completed an analysis of maximum reliable capacity for the Central System. Applications for additional water service will be limited to 1,200 gallons per day unless exempted by the rules.

Kahiko night at the Merrie Monarch Festival featured hula in the ancient style with 29 groups performing Friday night in the annual competition in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. The festival continues tonight with ʻauana or modern hula, followed by results from the 61st event.
