Terminal Patient Becomes First to Request Prescription Under New Hawai‘i Law

Terminal cancer patient and medical aid-in-dying advocate John Radcliffe, today went on record as Hawaiʻi’s first individual to request a prescription for aid-in-dying medication under a new law that took effect on Jan. 1, 2019.

Starting tomorrow, residents with a terminal illness and 6 months or less to live may request medical-aid-in-dying prescriptions under Our Care, Our Choice Act.

Medical Aid in Dying Bill Passes Out of Senate

The Hawai‘i Senate on Thursday voted 23-2 to pass House Bill 2739 titled “Our Care, Our Choice Act.”

More than 100 people testified on a medical aid in dying bill, with an additional 600 people submitting written testimony during a five hour hearing yesterday.

Circuit Court Dismisses Medical Aid-in-Dying Case

Noting that the legislation generated 2,613 pages of testimony and comments, the court said “this underscores that the relief sought by the plaintiffs is political, not judicial, in nature and should be addressed by the political branches of government.”

Community Divided: Aid In Dying Bill Deferred

The House Health Committee today deferred Senate Bill 1129, the medical aid in dying bill, effectively killing the measure for this session.
