The Kaua‘i Police Department is introducing Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance public safety, strengthen investigative capabilities, and improve the department’s ability to respond to criminal activity throughout the island.

The Hawai’i Government Employees Association is raising privacy and accountability concerns over the state’s use of license plate recognition cameras. HGEA leaders say the State Department of Law Enforcement’s proposal deserves full scrutiny to ensure civil liberties are protected.
