After hearing testimony overwhelmingly opposed to Air Force plans to build and operate up to seven telescopes atop Haleakalā, Maui County Council members unanimously supported a resolution opposing construction of the proposed Air Force Maui Optical and Supercomputing Site Small Telescope Advanced Research facility.
Maui Council to consider resolution opposing construction of telescope facility on Haleakalā
Council Member Keani Rawlins-Fernandez announced today that the Maui County Council will consider Resolution 24-103 opposing construction of the proposed Air Force Maui Optical and Supercomputing Site Small Telescope Advanced Research facility, also known as AMOS STAR, on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Maui Council to hold two special meetings to finalize budget and consider resolution on Air Force telescope atop Haleakalā
The first special council meeting will only include budget-related legislation for the county’s fiscal year that begins July 1. The second meeting is on Resolution 24-103, providing comments on the proposed Maui Optical and Supercomputing Site Small Telescope Advanced Research facility, or AMOS STAR, atop Haleakalā.
Air Force proposes facility consisting of up to seven telescopes at Haleakalā on Maui
The proposed facility would consist of up to seven telescopes enclosed in domes that would be constructed on a developed site adjacent to the Haleakalā Observatory and the 15th Space Surveillance Squadron Maui Space Surveillance Complex.
