Feb. 23, 2022 COVID-19 update: 134 new infections in Hawaiʻi

Todayʻs count includes two cases on Maui, 12 on Hawaiʻi Island, 10 on Kauaʻi, one on Molokaʻi, 0 on Lānaʻi, and 18 out of state.  There are 91 new COVID-19 cases on Oʻahu.

Feb. 22, 2022 COVID-19 update: 150 new infections in Hawaiʻi

The latest data represents a total of 6,306 “active” cases statewide over two weeks. This is below the delta peak of 11,500. Maui County’s seven day average of cases is now 24.9 cases per 100,000. This is below the delta peak of 57.6 per 100,000 reported on Aug. 25, and the 412.1 per 100,000 reported on Jan. 21, 2022.

There were 431 additional COVID-19 cases in Hawai‘i on Monday, including 38 on Maui.

One Case of “Delta” Variant Detected in Hawai‘i by State Lab

The variant was detected in a specimen from an O‘ahu resident, who traveled to Nevada in early May. The person was fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to travel and had a negative SARS-CoV-2 test prior to departing Nevada. The person developed mild symptoms consistent with COVID-19 several days after returning to Hawai‘i and tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. To date, there is no evidence of household transmission or secondary cases.

More than Half of New COVID-19 Cases on Maui are Variants

Health officials say more than half of the COVID-19 cases on Maui at this point, as identified through weekly reports, are represented by “variants of concern,” B1.429 and B.1.427.

The state Department of Health reports that there were 45 additional COVID-19 cases reported in Hawai‘i on Monday, including 21 on O‘ahu, 11 on Maui, 10 on Hawai‘i Island, and three in Hawai‘i residents diagnosed outside of the state.

There were 17 new COVID-19 cases reported in Hawai‘i on Tuesday, including 13 on O‘ahu, three on Maui, and one in a Hawaiʻi resident diagnosed outside of the state. It’s the lowest daily case count the state has seen since July 2020.

Hawai‘i State Lab Detects COVID-19 Variant

The Hawai‘i Department of Health State Laboratories Division has detected the SARS-CoV-2 variant L452R. This strain of COVID-19 was first detected in Denmark in March 2020. It is now found in more than a dozen US states.
