The Department of the Interior announced Monday a $20 million investment through President Biden’s Investing in America agenda to bolster climate resilience in Hawaiʻi.

The Department of the Interior’s Office of Native Hawaiian Relations today announced $1 million in funding for Native Hawaiian Organizations through the Heritage Opportunities in Hawaiʻi grant program. The funding is made possible by the Native American Tourism and Improving Visitor Experience Act, which enables Indigenous communities to participate in national tourism goals and strategies.

The bill contains billions in assistance for Hawai‘i, including $49 million directed to 14 specific needs under Community Project Funding supported by US Rep. Ed Case.

At Haleakalā National Park yesterday, the Director of Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and conservationists involved in Birds, Not Mosquitoes, shed light on the ongoing project to save native birds on East Maui. 

The new guidance was developed collaboratively and informed by ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi practitioners, instructors and advocates.

The Department of the Interior’s Office of Native Hawaiian Relations announced the awarding of $1 million in grants to eight Native Hawaiian organizations to implement the Native American Tourism and Improving Visitor Experience Act.

For the first time in the agency’s history, the Department of the Interior will require formal consultation with the Native Hawaiian Community.
